fats with extra-virgin olive oil, which,
like wine, is rich in polyphenols. For

EAT YO UR VEGGIES
Vietnam has one of the lowest per-
capita rates of Type 2 diabetes in the
world. Why? The Vietnamese eat a
primarily vegetarian diet—and scores
of studies show plant-based diets to
be highly beneficial in helping reduce
risk of obesity and disease.
Vegetarian diets are typically low in
saturated fats, high in fiber, and rich
in antioxidants. Vegetables (and eggs)
also provide B vitamins and biotin,
which can help the liver and muscles
use glucose. Activity also plays a huge
part in helping the Vietnamese. The
major mode of local transportation is
the bicycle.
Lessons to bring home You don’t
have to become a vegetarian, but
you should reduce your intake of
saturated fats and increase the
amount of fruits and vegetables you
eat. Try to get protein from multiple
healthful sources such as lean meats,
fish, eggs, and soy. And do whatever
you can to get at least 30 minutes of
aerobic exercise on most days.
Bicycling or walking is an excellent
place to start.

In the United States, people of Latin
American and African heritage have
the highest and fastest-growing rates
of diabetes—around double their
Caucasian counterparts. But in non-
urban regions of Central America
and Central Africa, diabetes is rare.
The sudden surge in diabetes
among people of these backgrounds
has a lot to do with the large number
abandoning the diet of their cultures,
especially legumes (beans, lentils,
and peas), and adopting more
Americanized eating patterns. Beans,
peas, and other legumes provide
multiple levels of protection against
diabetes: Their soluble fiber and
complex carbohydrates help manage
insulin levels and lower blood
glucose. And legumes are full of
antioxidants, known to reduce the
risk of everything from diabetes to
heart disease to some cancers.
News in Treatment and Prevention
■ Prediabetes: It pays
to be aggressive.
Prediabetes is less likely to
progress to Type 2 diabetes,
or result in cardiovascular
disease, if tackled with
proper diet and exercise
as well as with medications
to control blood pressure
and cholesterol levels if
either o f those are elevated.
Previously, most doctors
took more of a watchful
waiting stance with
prediabetes.
■ Depression may
lead to diabetes.
Doctors have long known
that people with diabetes
are more prone to
depression. But now it
seem s it goes both ways—
depression may increase
the risk of developing
diabetes. Seek help if
you suspect you may
be depressed.
■ Consider a
pneumonia vaccine.
Danish researchers
recently found a strong
link between having
diabetes and an increased
risk for developing
pneumonia that requires
hospitalization. If you have
diabetes, decide with your
doctor whether you should
get a pneumonia vaccine.
